  1. I am happy that you discuss here the history and have a great description of the Battle of Secessionville, which took place on John’s Island near Charleston in 1862. My direct ancestor was Colonel Thomas G. Lamar, for whom the fort was named after the War Between the States. He commanded the troops and erected the defenses there to protect Charleston from the invading horde. He was wounded during the battle and was proud to defend his home and land from attack by hostile forces. We should honor those who were willing to fight for their beliefs.

    • Barney,

Thank you so much for writing! I am honored to correspond with a direct descendant of Col. Thomas G. Lamar!

I have been very proud to give the address at the Battle of Secessionville Commemoration each year. Fort Lamar is such a sacred place. Most of the fort is intact though shows the weathering you would expect after 161 years.

The battle took place on June 16th but we have been having the commemoration in November in recent years. Come join us when you can!

We will always honor all of those boys who took up arms to defend their homes and families when invaded.

They wrote the book on American valor. There is none in the history of the world that is greater than displayed by Confederate soldiers 1861 to 1865.

      Gene
